The Divine Balance: Huqooq-Allah & Huqooq-ul-Ibad

In Islam, personal devotion to the Creator (Huqooq-Allah) must be accompanied by fulfilling social obligations toward fellow human beings (Huqooq-ul-Ibad). On the Day of Judgment, Allah may forgive shortcomings in His rights, but wrongs against fellow humans require forgiveness from the victims themselves (Sahih Muslim 2581).

1. The Sacred Rights of Parents (Birr al-Walidayn)

Directly paired with monotheism in the Quran: "And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment" (Surah Al-Isra 17:23). Mothers hold a special threefold rank of honoring due to pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing (Sahih al-Bukhari 5971).

2. Rights of Spouses & Family

Marital life is founded on mutual tranquility, love, and mercy: "And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy" (Surah Ar-Rum 30:21). The Prophet ﷺ declared: "The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3895).

3. Rights of Neighbors (Huqooq al-Jeeran)

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized: "Jibreel kept enjoining upon me good treatment of the neighbor until I thought he would make him an heir" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6014). Islam forbids going to bed satisfied while knowing your neighbor is hungry.

4. Rights of Workers & Employees

Islam protects the dignity and compensation of laborers. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ commanded: "Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries" (Sunan Ibn Majah 2443), and warned that Allah Himself will be the adversary of anyone who hires a worker and fails to pay full wages (Sahih al-Bukhari 2227).

5. Rights of Orphans & the Vulnerable

Defrauding or mistreating orphans is severely condemned (Surah An-Nisa 4:10). The Prophet ﷺ raised his index and middle fingers together, declaring: "I and the sponsor of an orphan will be like this in Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5304).
