The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stated: "Islam is built upon five: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, paying Zakat, performing Hajj, and fasting during Ramadan" (Sahih al-Bukhari 8, Sahih Muslim 16).
1. Shahadah (Declaration of Faith)
The bedrock of Islamic creed: "Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah" (I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). It encompasses pure monotheism (Tawheed) and accepting the Prophet ﷺ as the final exemplar (Surah Muhammad 47:19).
2. Salah (The Five Daily Prayers)
The spiritual communication performed five times each day: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. Salah purifies the heart, restrains from indecency (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:45), and unites the Ummah. Track your prayers daily on our Salah Tracker.
3. Zakat (Obligatory Charity)
An annual 2.5% wealth purification on surplus assets held for one lunar year above the Nisab threshold. Zakat purifies wealth, alleviates poverty, and fosters communal solidarity (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60, 9:103). Calculate yours accurately on our Zakat Calculator.
4. Sawm (Fasting Ramadan)
Fasting from pre-dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib) throughout the month of Ramadan, refraining from food, drink, and marital intimacy. Its primary goal is cultivating God-consciousness (Taqwa) and empathy for the needy (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183). Read our complete Ramadan Guide.
5. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah)
The pilgrimage to al-Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who possesses physical and financial ability (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:97). It symbolizes absolute equality, unity of all nations under Allah, and the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Learn all rites in our Hajj & Umrah Guide.
