The Divine Blessing of Tayammum
Tayammum is the symbolic, ritual dry purification with clean earth ordained by Allah as a mercy and ease when water is unavailable or medically harmful. Allah states: "...and you find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving" (Surah An-Nisa 4:43).
Valid Circumstances Permitting Tayammum
- 1. Total Absence of Water: When water cannot be found within a reasonable traveling distance (approx. 1 mile / 1.6 km), or the only available water is strictly needed for human or animal drinking.
- 2. Medical Inability or Illness: If using water would cause injury, aggravate an illness, or delay healing as advised by a reliable physician.
- 3. Extreme Freezing Cold: When water is near freezing and heating water is impossible, posing severe health risk (hypothermia).
- 4. Danger in Accessing Water: Fear of predators, hostile persons, or injury in reaching the water source.
The Authentic Sunnah Method (Step-by-Step)
Documented in Sahih al-Bukhari (338) from the tradition of Ammar ibn Yasir (RA):
- Make sincere intention (Niyyah) in the heart for purification and recite "Bismillah".
- Strike clean dry earth, sand, or unglazed stone gently once with both palms.
- Blow gently onto your palms to remove excess dust.
- Wipe the entire face once with both hands.
- Wipe the back of the right hand with the left palm, and the back of the left hand with the right palm (up to the wrists).
What Nullifies Tayammum?
Tayammum is nullified by everything that breaks normal Wudu or Ghusl, plus the moment clean water becomes accessible and safe to use.
