The 6 Articles of Faith in Islam (Arkan al-Iman) — Core Islamic Creed

In-depth guide to the 6 Articles of Faith (Iman) in Islam: Belief in Allah, Angels, Books, Prophets, Day of Judgment, and Divine Decree (Qadr) with Quranic and Hadith proofs.

Documented in the renowned Hadith of Jibreel (Sahih Muslim 8) and Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285), the six pillars of Iman form the non-negotiable core of Islamic theological doctrine (Aqeedah):

1. Belief in Allah (Tawheed)

Affirming Allah's absolute oneness in His Lordship (Rububiyyah), His exclusive right to all worship (Uluhiyyah), and His unique Names and Attributes (Asma wa Sifat) without likening Him to creation: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing" (Surah Ash-Shura 42:11).

2. Belief in the Angels (Mala'ikah)

Created from light (Sahih Muslim 2996), angels are noble beings who never disobey Allah. Believers affirm archangels including Jibril (revelation), Mikail (sustenance and rain), Israfil (blowing the trumpet), and Malik al-Mawt (angel of death).

3. Belief in the Revealed Scriptures (Kutub)

Belief that Allah revealed divine scriptures to His messengers, including the Suhuf of Ibrahim, the Tawrat to Musa, the Zabur to Dawud, the Injeel to Isa, and the Holy Quran revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the final, perfectly preserved divine miracle (Surah Al-Hijr 15:9).

4. Belief in the Messengers & Prophets (Rusul)

Belief in all chosen prophets sent to guide humanity to monotheism, starting from Adam (AS) through Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, to the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad ﷺ (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:40). Explore their inspiring journeys in our Stories of the Prophets Guide.

5. Belief in the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah)

Belief in the physical resurrection, the gathering of all humanity, the presentation of records, the divine Scale (Mizan), the Bridge (Sirat), the Intercession of the Prophet ﷺ, and the final reality of Paradise (Jannah) and Hellfire (Jahannam) (Surah Al-Zalzalah 99:7–8).

6. Belief in Divine Decree (Al-Qadr)

Belief that everything in creation occurs according to Allah's eternal knowledge (Ilm), His writing in the Preserved Tablet (Kitabah), His sovereign will (Mashiyyah), and His divine creation of all events (Khalq). Humans possess genuine free will and moral accountability within Allah's encompassing sovereignty.
